80th Anniversary of D-Day Landings Commemorated in Penzance
Today marks the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings, a pivotal event in World War II. Penzance Council, along with local community groups, hosted several commemorations to honour the bravery and sacrifice of those who participated in the largest seaborne invasion in history.
A Day of Reflection and Honour
The Normandy landings, code-named Operation Neptune, took place on 6 June 1944 and were instrumental in liberating Western Europe from Nazi occupation. The operation, which claimed the lives of thousands of allied soldiers, many of whom were just teenagers, is remembered for its significant role in securing the freedoms enjoyed today.

Ceremonies Across Penzance and Mousehole
In Penzance, the official D-Day Anniversary Proclamation was read this morning by Penzance Town Crier. The event included a short service and ceremony attended by the Mayor of Penzance, and was held at both Penzance and Mousehole. The ceremonies were organised with the help of Penzance and Heamoor Royal British Legion Branches, Penzance Community Fire Station, and local veterans, as well as members of the public who gathered at Battery Rocks.
Mousehole Royal British Legion coordinated the ceremony at the war memorial in Mousehole Harbour. This solemn event was a time for the community to come together and pay their respects to the fallen heroes.
