New Care Home to Revolutionise Dementia Care in St Austell

Published On: 3 May 2024Last Updated: 3 May 2024By

Plans for a new 76-bed care home have been officially lodged, promising to significantly enhance the care facilities for residents with dementia near St Austell.

The project, set to be built on the grounds of the existing Hendra Court in Par, comes as a response to the pressing need for specialised dementia care in the region.

Addressing a Critical Need

Architectural firm Poynton Bradbury Architects, in collaboration with Cornwallis Care Services, is spearheading the project. This development is poised to address the critical shortage of dementia and mental health care provisions in mid Cornwall. Stuart, managing director of Cornwallis Care Services, highlighted the project’s alignment with Cornwall Council’s goals for improving care home standards through new builds rather than modifications of existing structures.

Design and Features

The proposed care home design focuses on creating a dementia-friendly environment. Josie Dorling, project architect and specialist in later living and care, detailed the thoughtful design elements aimed at enhancing residents’ independence and ease of navigation. The care home will be arranged in three wings, centred around a communal wing that promotes social interaction among residents.

Each bedroom door will be recessed off the corridors to create distinct, personalised spaces that aid residents in identifying their rooms. The site will also include a communal courtyard, providing secure outdoor space that promotes physical activity and mental health.

Sustainable Construction

In line with modern environmental standards, the new building will strive for a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating. It will incorporate sustainable technologies such as roof-mounted solar PV panels and air source heat pumps, ensuring energy efficiency and reduced operational costs.

Phased Development

The construction will proceed in phases, allowing for the seamless transfer of existing residents to the new facility upon completion. Future plans include the redevelopment of the historic house and its extensions into close care accommodation, further expanding the site’s capacity and services.

This significant development not only promises improved care options for those with dementia but also sets a benchmark in care home design and sustainability.
