Dangerous Hole Found on Tregirls Beach
On Saturday, June 29th, 2024, a significant safety hazard was discovered at Tregirls Beach. A massive hole, approximately 9 feet wide and 8 feet deep, had been dug by hand, raising serious concerns about the potential dangers it posed to beachgoers.
The hole, which was large enough to cause serious injury or even death, was brought to the attention of HM Coastguard Padstow by a concerned local, Sean Porter. Recognising the immediate risk, the Coastguard acted swiftly to address the situation.
Urgent Action Taken to Fill the Hole
To mitigate the danger, local farmer, Charlie Watson Smyth of Padstow Farm, was enlisted to fill in the hole using a telehandler. The size of the equipment required to fill the hole underscored the significant risk it presented. The potential for sand hole collapses to cause fatalities is well-documented, making the prompt response crucial.
HM Coastguard Padstow emphasised the importance of not digging such large holes on beaches and advised parents to fill in any small holes their children might dig before leaving the area.
Community Alert and Safety Reminder
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the hazards that can arise from seemingly innocent activities. HM Coastguard Padstow expressed gratitude to Sean Porter for alerting them to the presence of the hole and providing photographs, which aided in the swift resolution of the issue.
As of the latest update, the hole has been successfully filled in, ensuring the safety of Tregirls Beach for all visitors. The Coastguard thanked Charlie Watson Smyth for his prompt assistance in making the area safe once again.
Beachgoers are reminded to exercise caution and adhere to safety guidelines to prevent similar incidents in the future.
