Dramatic Early Morning Rescue: RNLI Volunteers Brave 67mph Winds to Save Rowers

Published On: 7 July 2024Last Updated: 7 July 2024By

In the early hours of yesterday, Padstow lifeboat crew sprang into action following a pager alarm at 2.41 am.

The team was dispatched to Port Quin Bay to assist an endurance rowing boat in distress. The vessel, with six crew members on board, had been dragging its anchor amid treacherous conditions.

Challenging Conditions

The rescue operation faced significant challenges due to fierce winds gusting at 67mph. Despite these harsh conditions, the Padstow lifeboat crew remained undeterred. They were not alone in their efforts; Rock RNLI Lifeboat was also tasked to the scene, while Polzeath Coastguard provided safety cover from the land.

Safe Evacuation and Towing

Upon arrival, the crews assessed the situation and determined the best course of action. Given the severity of the conditions, it was decided to evacuate the six rowers from their vessel to the safety of the Padstow lifeboat. This transfer was successfully completed, ensuring the rowers were out of immediate danger.

With the assistance of Rock RNLI, the abandoned rowing boat was then taken under tow. The combined efforts of the lifeboat teams ensured that the vessel was safely escorted into Padstow Harbour.

Mission Accomplished

The Padstow lifeboat crew returned to their station by 7 am. After refuelling and conducting necessary checks, the lifeboat was declared ready for service once again.

The swift and coordinated response by the RNLI volunteers exemplifies their dedication and bravery, ensuring the safety of those in perilous maritime situations.
