Revolutionary Diabetes Care Changes Coming to Cornwall: Join the Movement!

Published On: 20 May 2024Last Updated: 20 May 2024By

In a significant move to transform diabetes care in Cornwall, a new diabetes clinical reference group (CRG) has been established.

This group aims to reshape the way care is provided to local residents with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. The CRG is a collaboration of medical, public health, and voluntary sector professionals dedicated to enhancing diabetes services.

The chair of the CRG, the community lead nurse for diabetes, is spearheading this effort. To further support this initiative, the integrated care board is inviting local individuals with experience of type 1, type 2, or gestational diabetes to contribute their insights and feedback on future care provisions.

Get Involved: Share Your Experience

Dr Chris Reid, Chief Medical Officer for NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Integrated Care Board, emphasises the importance of input from people living with diabetes. “We know that people with diabetes are experts in their condition and we want to hear their feedback about how we can improve our services,” Dr Reid said. “Ultimately, we want to support people to manage their diabetes more effectively. So we would love to hear from people who can help us by joining our expert reference group.”

There are various ways for individuals to get involved, including online and in-person opportunities. These include participating in surveys, providing feedback in group discussions, and collaborating with staff and clinicians to design future services.

Those interested can register their interest by completing an online form by Friday, 31 May. Registrants will be invited to attend one of two meetings on Wednesday, 5 June at 11 am or 6 pm, available both in person and online, to receive further information.

Broadening the Scope of Feedback

Amanda Veall, CRG lead, highlights the inclusive approach of the group. “It’s important that anyone with diabetes can have a say in their care which is why we are forming this group to provide feedback and shape future services,” Amanda said. “No matter what type of diabetes you have or whether you can only support us online or in person we want to hear from you. We’re also interested in people who have a family history of diabetes or who want to understand more about diabetes services.”

Success Stories in Cornwall

Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly are already home to several successful programmes aimed at supporting people with diabetes. One such programme is the innovative ‘super clinic’ model, which consolidates nine separate medical checks into a single 30-minute appointment. Another is the Diabetes and You programme delivered by Kernow Health, offering essential support and guidance to individuals newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, as well as those already living with the condition.

In addition, over 1,000 people at risk of diabetes have engaged with the diabetes prevention programme in 2023/24. This programme helps individuals make long-term positive lifestyle changes, lose weight, and reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Face-to-face courses have been launched across 44 different venues in Cornwall, complemented by a highly successful digital course.

This call for involvement is a crucial step in ensuring that diabetes care in Cornwall is shaped by the very people it aims to support. By participating, local residents can play a vital role in enhancing the quality and effectiveness of diabetes services across the region.
