Norovirus Cases Surge in Cornwall: Health Authorities Urge Public Caution
In Cornwall, the NHS has issued a warning regarding a significant increase in Norovirus cases, often referred to as the winter vomiting bug.
Health officials are calling on residents to take preventive measures to curb the spread of this highly contagious virus.
Chris Reid, the Chief Medical Officer for NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Integrated Care Board, emphasised the importance of staying at home for those exhibiting symptoms of Norovirus, which includes vomiting and diarrhoea. Dr. Reid advises against visiting hospitals, care homes, and other healthcare settings if symptoms are present, to protect the vulnerable populations in these facilities.
The NHS is recommending that those feeling unwell should seek advice online or ask a relative or friend to visit a pharmacy on their behalf. It’s particularly crucial to inform clinics ahead of time if you have a scheduled appointment but are showing symptoms of Norovirus. Alternatives such as phone or online consultations may be offered, or appointments could be rescheduled.
Handwashing with soap and warm water is highlighted as a critical preventive measure, as alcohol-based hand gels are ineffective against the Norovirus. The public is also urged to check with hospitals regarding visiting policies, as some wards may restrict visitors to prevent further spread of the virus.
While Norovirus is highly unpleasant, it typically resolves within a few days. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, as well as possible fever, headaches, and body aches, appearing 1 to 2 days after infection. Individuals affected are advised to rest at home and stay hydrated to prevent dehydration. It’s also recommended to stay off work or school until at least 2 days after the symptoms have ceased.
