‘I Feel Lucky’: Cornish Woman in Remission Thanks to Groundbreaking Clinical Trial
A woman from St Austell is celebrating a major breakthrough in her battle with myeloma, after a clinical trial at Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust (RCHT) put her in remission.
A Life-Changing Diagnosis
Emma Hunkin, 47, from Penwithick, was diagnosed with myeloma, a type of blood cancer, in December 2022. The news was life-altering, but an opportunity to participate in medical research has dramatically changed her outlook.
Shortly after her diagnosis, Emma was offered a place on a clinical trial at RCHT. The trial involves a multi-stage treatment process, including induction chemotherapy, a stem cell transplant, consolidation treatment, and ongoing maintenance therapy.
Hope Through Research
Emma credits the trial for significantly improving her quality of life, stating:
“The support from the Research Team has been incredible. I feel lucky to have been given the opportunity to be treated through a clinical trial that has put me in a solid remission and keeps me there.”
Despite experiencing side effects that affect her energy levels, Emma continues to work at a coffee shop, exercise, and travel. Her fortnightly infusions and monthly health checks at RCHT ensure she remains stable while allowing her to maintain an active lifestyle.
Family Support and Gratitude
Throughout her treatment, Emma’s husband, Neil, and their son, Will, have been by her side, along with their energetic puppy. The family, who enjoy walking the Cornish coast path together, are deeply grateful for the support provided by the Research Team, especially during the more challenging moments of Emma’s journey.
Emma’s story highlights the vital role of research in developing effective treatments for conditions like myeloma. Her experience serves as a source of hope and inspiration for others facing similar challenges.
