In a significant leap forward for cervical cancer treatment, the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust (RCHT) has played a pivotal role in an international trial, the results of which are poised to redefine standard care practices for the disease.

The INTERLACE trial’s findings herald a new era of improved patient outcomes, offering hope to women diagnosed with cervical cancer.

Trial Success

The trial focused on an innovative treatment regimen, incorporating an additional course of carboplatin and paclitaxel chemotherapy over six weeks, prior to the established chemoradiation therapy, which includes radiotherapy plus cisplatin and brachytherapy. This approach was tested against the current standard treatment in a control group, revealing significantly better outcomes for the patients receiving the new treatment.

After five years, the results were compelling. Seventy-three percent of women in the trial group experienced no recurrence or spread of their cancer, with 80% surviving the period, in stark contrast to the control group’s 64% and 72% rates, respectively. This trial spanned five countries and involved 500 patients, underscoring its wide-reaching implications for future treatment protocols.

Patient Perspectives

Karen, a participant in the INTERLACE trial from RCHT, shared her uplifting experience. During a time filled with anxiety and uncertainty, her involvement in the trial not only boosted her confidence but also provided her with access to some of the world’s leading oncology and research teams and state-of-the-art equipment at Treliske Hospital. The success of her treatment, coupled with the positive outcomes of the trial, has been a source of immense relief and joy for Karen and her family.

“I found the research experience really gave my confidence a boost at a very difficult and anxious time,” Karen said. She expressed gratitude for being part of a study that not only enhanced her chances of survival but also promises to improve outcomes for future patients.

A New Standard

The INTERLACE trial’s results are set to revolutionize the treatment of cervical cancer, offering a new beacon of hope for patients worldwide. The Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust’s involvement in this groundbreaking research underscores the UK’s commitment to advancing cancer treatment and patient care. With these findings, women diagnosed with cervical cancer can look forward to a treatment pathway that promises better survival rates and outcomes, marking a significant step forward in the battle against this disease.
