Exciting News for Royal Cornwall Hospitals: Shortlisted for Prestigious National Construction Awards
The Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust (RCHT) has reached the finals in two esteemed categories at this year’s Construction News Awards, celebrating significant achievements in community engagement and project development.
A Healing Touch Through Nature
The newly created Critical Care Healing Garden at RCHT has been nominated for the Community Engagement Project of the Year. This project came to fruition in September 2023, thanks to extensive fundraising efforts supported by numerous charitable donations from both the local community and wider areas. This serene garden allows critically ill patients to be immersed in the fresh air and tranquility of nature, providing a soothing retreat from the clinical environment.
Roberta, the Associate Director for Major Capital Projects at RCHT, expressed her delight over the nomination, highlighting the garden as a prime example of the trust’s commitment to enhancing patient and staff environments through thoughtful and innovative spaces.
Innovation in Medical Facilities: The Lowen Ward and Trelawny Scanning Suite
Opening its doors in June 2023, the Lowen Ward and Trelawny Scanning Suite have been shortlisted for Project of the Year (£20m – £50m). This extension to the existing Trelawny Wing spans three floors and integrates seamlessly with the hospital’s main Imaging Department. It features two new MRI scanners, enhanced ultrasound rooms, and expanded bed capacity for haematology and oncology services.
Additionally, the facility boasts eight isolation rooms, a specialised palliative care suite, and a modern iodine treatment room, all designed to offer a secure and welcoming environment for patients. The inclusion of state-of-the-art estates and facilities services, such as a vacuum drainage system, underscores the project’s emphasis on technical innovation and patient comfort.
Roberta commented on the shortlisting, praising the project for its role in transforming the hospital’s estate into a safe and modern facility that stands out as a beacon of quality care in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.
A Night of Anticipation
The winners of the Construction News Awards will be unveiled at a grand ceremony in London on Thursday 11 July. These awards are highly regarded within the industry, recognising the best in project excellence, technical innovation, and overall sector contributions, including entries from some of the largest contractors in the construction field.
As RCHT looks forward to the event, the teams behind the Critical Care Healing Garden and the Lowen Ward and Trelawny Scanning Suite are hopeful for success, ready to celebrate their hard work and the positive impact of their projects on the community and the healthcare sector.
