“Don’t Miss Your Shot!” Spring COVID-19 Vaccination Drive Launches in Cornwall

Published On: 17 April 2024Last Updated: 17 April 2024By

This week marks the beginning of the eagerly anticipated spring COVID-19 vaccination campaign across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, targeting the most at-risk populations to safeguard against the ongoing threat of COVID-19.

The NHS has initiated this top-up vaccination drive to boost immunity among the elderly, immunosuppressed, and residents in care homes.

Immediate Focus on Care Homes

The campaign kicked off with vaccinations already underway in care homes throughout the region. Residents such as Isabel Ellis, aged 92, from St Margarets Nursing Home in St Columb, are among the first to receive their jabs. “I feel it is important to have the top-up vaccine to stay safe. I think it is the right thing to do,” Isabel commented on her vaccination day, which was this past Monday, 15 April.

Her fellow resident, Barry, also stressed the importance of these vaccinations, saying, “You never know what might happen, and you cannot be too safe so I think topping up my immunity with the vaccination is important.”

Wider Public Eligibility

Starting Monday, 22 April, the NHS booking system will open for other eligible groups, including individuals 75 years of age and older, and those aged 6 months and above who are immunosuppressed. These appointments aim to extend protection to those who are most vulnerable as the summer months approach.

Importance of the Top-Up Vaccination

Iain Davidson, the Chief Pharmacist at Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust, has strongly advocated for the continuation of vaccinations. “As we approach the summer, it is crucial to ensure that our most vulnerable populations are protected against COVID-19. The top-up vaccine is an essential step in maintaining immunity as we understand immunity decreases over time,” he explained.

What Does Being Immunosuppressed Mean?

Being immunosuppressed means having a weakened immune system that is less capable of fighting infections and diseases, which makes affected individuals more susceptible to illnesses. This condition can result from various factors including certain health conditions, treatments, or medications such as chemotherapy, organ transplants, and certain autoimmune diseases.

How to Get Vaccinated

Those eligible for the spring vaccination can book their appointments through the national NHS website. In addition, walk-in vaccinations will become available in the coming weeks, with details to be announced on the NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly’s website. Many GP surgeries are also participating in the campaign, and appointments can be made directly through them.

The NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly is committed to this vaccination drive as part of their ongoing efforts to manage COVID-19 and ensure the community’s safety.
