Cornwall Resident Transforms Health Through Pioneering Diabetes Study
Laura Martin, a resident of St Austell, has shared her remarkable journey as a participant in a ground-breaking diabetes study conducted by the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust (RCHT). This innovative research is designed to help individuals with type 2 diabetes lower their blood sugar levels and reduce body weight.
A Life-Changing Journey
Since January 2024, Laura has been part of this pioneering study, which involves taking weekly medication aimed at stabilising blood sugar levels while promoting weight loss. Laura, who is one of nine participants from RCHT, was first invited to join the study through her GP surgery.
Her involvement includes regular monitoring, with study visits initially held every four weeks and now extended to every eight weeks. The team also keeps in touch with follow-up phone calls to track progress.
Speaking about her experience, Laura said:
“The research team have been brilliant, monitoring right the way through. They’re always here for questions, I can just phone up and talk to someone. It’s really nice to know that there is always someone there. I feel really looked after on this trial.”
Significant Health Improvements
Since starting the trial, Laura has experienced dramatic improvements in her health. Her blood sugar levels have stabilised to normal, and she feels better both physically and mentally. An added benefit has been a significant weight loss, which Laura describes as a welcome bonus.
Laura explained how the study has enhanced her daily life:
“The positive effects of the study have also led me to enjoy more walks, socialising more, and feeling physically more capable.”
Supporting Others and Staying Active
Having lived in Cornwall for eight years, Laura is a retired special needs education worker originally from Hampshire. She keeps busy with volunteering at the Eden Project and Wheal Martin and running a social prescription group to promote mental and physical well-being.
Through her experience, Laura has also developed a deeper understanding of diet and nutrition, with hopes to share her insights with others facing similar challenges.
She expressed gratitude for the support she’s received:
“Thank you to the whole team here, they are all amazing. They’re so helpful and friendly and always have answers to any questions. I always feel very welcome here. They’ve all been fantastic.”
This pioneering research by RCHT showcases the potential for improving the lives of individuals with type 2 diabetes through innovative approaches and dedicated care. For Laura, it has been nothing short of transformative.
