Cornwall NHS Workers Launch Song for Autism Acceptance
In an inspiring move to mark World Autism Acceptance Week, two NHS colleagues from Cornwall have spearheaded the release of a new song titled ‘Welcome Home’.
Ian Summers from the Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and David from the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust have been the driving force behind this heartfelt project, aimed at promoting autism acceptance and inclusivity.
From Idea to Anthem
The concept of ‘Welcome Home’ originated from a conversation between Ian and David on how to enhance autism acceptance. Their discussion blossomed into a project that not only advocates for acceptance but also embodies hope and inclusivity. David expressed his enthusiasm for the project, highlighting the importance of positive language and the message of inclusion that the song conveys. “The title ‘Welcome Home’ signifies arrival, acceptance, and understanding, extending beyond the autistic community to embrace inclusivity for all,” David said.
The Voice of ‘Welcome Home’
Lucy Cox, a local singer and confidence specialist, lent her voice to ‘Welcome Home’. As a parent of autistic children, Lucy was immediately drawn to the project. The song, she hopes, will resonate with both the autistic community and the wider public, encouraging empathy and understanding. Lucy’s aim is for the lyrics to offer hope and recognition to those who feel misunderstood or out of place. “Listening to the song should make our wonderful autistic community feel seen and hopeful for the future,” Lucy explained.
A Charity Beneficiary
All proceeds from the song will support The Hugs Foundation, an equine rescue charity based in Bodmin that provides wellbeing support, including to children and young people. The charity has already assisted over 700 children, and with the funds raised through ‘Welcome Home’, it hopes to extend its reach. Hazel, the Youth Service Manager at the charity, shared her excitement about the song’s potential impact on their work. “Hearing the song for the first time left us all deeply moved. It’s a testament to how much it will mean to many,” she said.
How to Support
‘Welcome Home’ is available for streaming on Spotify, where listeners can embrace its message of hope and acceptance. Additionally, Lucy has initiated a fundraiser on Just Giving to benefit The Hugs Foundation, inviting those moved by the song’s message to contribute to a cause that supports the wellbeing of many.
This creative endeavour not only highlights the talents and compassion of those within the NHS and their communities but also serves as a beacon of hope and acceptance for the autistic community and beyond.
