Gazebo, Go-Karts and Grit at Predannack Airfield

Students from Treviglas Academy recently made their debut at the Greenpower Challenge, a national competition that tasks young people with designing, building and racing electric-powered go-karts.

The event, held at Predannack Airfield near Helston, brought together teams from across the country. For the eight-strong team from Treviglas, it was a full day of racing, teamwork and real-world problem solving — and they were supported by a local business every step of the way.

Support from Wain Homes South West

Ahead of the event, Treviglas reached out to Wain Homes South West, who stepped in to offer their help. The housebuilder provided a pit lane gazebo, shielding the team from the sun during the long day, along with breakfast and refreshments to keep spirits high.

Charlotte Pollard, teacher and team lead at Treviglas, said:
“This was our first time entering the Greenpower Challenge, and our Treviglas students were full of enthusiasm and motivation throughout the day. The support from Wain Homes was fantastic and made a real difference. With a 7:30am start and a finish in the late afternoon, the gazebo they provided gave us a much-needed shaded space to work on the car and take breaks. The breakfast they supplied was also a huge morale boost for the team!”

Strong Performance in a Competitive Field

Despite being newcomers, the Treviglas team placed 17th out of 26 teams overall and 13th among all kit cars — a solid result for a first-time entry. Most impressively, their electric go-kart completed the endurance race without a single mechanical issue, a challenge that can catch out even experienced teams.

Suzie Wakefield, Regional Marketing Coordinator at Wain Homes South West, said:
“We are so proud of how well the team did, especially as this was the first time they have participated in this competition, and we were pleased to have helped a school local to one of our popular developments.”

Treviglas Academy extended its thanks to Wain Homes for their support, which helped make the students’ first Greenpower experience both successful and memorable.
