In a recent operation that underscores the vigilance and readiness of the Newquay Coastguard Rescue Team and Newquay RNLI Lifeboats, an emergency call was responded to with promptness and professionalism. The incident, which took place on Tuesday, 13th February 2024, at approximately 1716hrs, was initiated by concerned 999 calls from the public reporting a Wing Foiler in difficulty at Little Fistral.
Upon their quick arrival at the scene, the Newquay Coastguard Rescue Team, working closely with the Newquay RNLI Lifeboat crew, conducted a thorough assessment of the situation. It was determined that the alert was a well-intentioned false alarm. A final check by the lifeboat crew confirmed that there was no individual in distress, leading to all responding assets being stood down.
The incident highlights the importance of public vigilance and the willingness to report potential dangers at sea. The coastguard team emphasised the appropriateness of the public’s response, stating, “This was the right call by the member of the public. If you see someone in difficulty, dial 999 and ask for the coastguard”.
The Newquay Coastguard Rescue Team and Newquay RNLI Lifeboats remain committed to ensuring the safety of individuals along the coast, encouraging the public to stay alert and report any signs of distress. Their message is clear: it’s better to call and be wrong than to hesitate and potentially allow a dangerous situation to escalate.
Stay safe, and never hesitate to reach out for help if you suspect someone is in trouble at sea.
