Surfers Celebrate 140 Years of Cornish Milestones at Newquay’s Lusty Glaze
A special weekend of birthdays and surf challenges
Last weekend saw a unique celebration in Newquay as the Cornish surf community came together to mark a combined 140 years of milestones. Sharp’s Brewing Co, Carve Magazine, Newquay Boardriders, and Lusty Glaze Beach joined forces to host a birthday bash like no other, with attendees enjoying sun, surf, and plenty of good vibes.
The celebration was in honour of Sharp’s and Carve Magazine’s 30th birthdays, Newquay Boardriders’ 55th year, and Lusty Glaze’s 25th anniversary. Together, these milestones highlighted the strength and passion of Cornwall’s surf culture, drawing in local teams for a fun-filled day.
Tag Team Surf Competition: Looe Takes the Lead
While the surf may not have been as monumental as hoped, it didn’t stop participants from diving into the Carve X Sharp’s Offshore Pilsner Tag Team Surf Competition, organised by Newquay Boardriders. Local teams from Looe and Newquay took to the waves for the event, with Looe A, captained by Ed Smith, securing first place.
Here are the overall results:
- Looe A
- Newquay Boardriders A
- Looe B
- Newquay Boardriders B
An Evening of Music and Celebration
As the competition wrapped up, the celebrations carried on into the evening. The joint birthday social began at 6pm with the surf competition prize-giving, followed by a lively mix of funk, soul, and beats from DJs Pete Isaac of Jelly Jazz and Bude’s B Side Social Club. Partygoers enjoyed stone-baked pizzas, along with a variety of hot and cold drinks, as the event continued late into the night at Lusty Glaze Beach.
Milestone Reflections from Organisers
Tracey Griffiths from Lusty Glaze Beach reflected on the occasion, saying, “This was a rare opportunity for the Newquay and Cornish surf community to come together and celebrate, and everyone involved had a really brilliant time. It was great to stand back in the sunshine, with the surfers in the water, and reflect on everything we’ve achieved with our brilliant team here over the last 25 years.”
Steve England, Editor of Carve Magazine, shared his thoughts on 30 years of publishing, adding, “We can hardly believe it’s been 30 years that we’ve been producing and printing the mag. Over those three decades we’ve published 224 editions and also a whole load of books. Sometimes you do need to stand back and consider all the work, faith, and investment that’s gone into all that – and to take time to celebrate.”
Nick White, Brand Activation Manager at Sharp’s Brewing Co, also expressed his excitement about the event, saying, “We’ve loved working in partnership with Carve, and its sister magazine SurfGirl, over the decades and we’ve got the same love for what we do in common. It just made perfect sense to come together with the Cornish surf community on one of our favourite beaches – Lusty Glaze.”
Looking Ahead for Newquay Boardriders
Zoe Sheath of Newquay Boardriders spoke about the significance of the event for the club’s 55th year, saying, “55 years of club surfing is certainly an achievement, and Newquay Boardriders has a lot of very exciting news and happenings to come in our 55th year.”
Despite the moderate surf, the day was a success, with teams and partygoers making the most of the sunshine and celebrations.
