Newquay’s Paddle for Life Returns: A Colourful Tribute to Joe’s 21st

Published On: 6 March 2025Last Updated: 6 March 2025By

Joe, who was born with Angelman’s Syndrome, passed away on 7th May 2008 at just four years old. Despite battling meningitis, Steven Johnson Syndrome (SJS), and multiple superbugs, he was known as a miracle boy. Sadly, he succumbed to complete organ failure after a second battle with SJS.

His legacy began in September 2008, when Newquay lifeguards organised the first Joe Way Memorial Paddle, which later became the Joe Way Paddle for Life. Over 11 annual events and nearly 100 fundraising efforts, the initiative raised over £180,000 for more than 20 charities.

The Return of the Paddle

The event has been on hold since 2020, first due to Covid and later as the Way family faced a serious illness. Now, the family feels it is the right time to bring it back.

Claire Way, Joe’s mum, shared: “Joe would have been 21 last September so the daily memories are magnified, and with what everyone has been through the last four years, it feels right to mark this milestone and spread some goodwill across the community.”

His dad, Matt, a member of Newquay Towan Blystra Lions Club, added: “The last event was so good, we were nervous to go for it again. However, the Lions and Surf Lifesaving Cornwall were fully in favour as were previous Paddle supporters as well as new supporters. It’s always been a fun community event and a great way to celebrate Joe’s short but impactful life.”

What to Expect

The 2024 Paddle for Life is set to be an unforgettable event, packed with live entertainment, charity stands, and exciting displays:

  • Skydivers from Cornwall Skydive will land on Towan Beach flying Joe’s flag
  • Live music and a DJ set at Newquay Rowing Club
  • Titan the Robot will make a special appearance
  • 200 paddlers will take part, including the RNLI beach lifeguards’ memorial paddle

Local Support Grows

Fundraising has already begun, with four business sponsors pledging £500 each, adding £2,000 to the pot. Start and Co, Pitched Web Design, St Columb Financial Services, and Henwood Funeral Directors have all stepped up to support the event once again.
