Hundreds Take the Plunge for Children’s Charity in Annual New Year’s Day Dip

Despite a dreary weather forecast, spirits were high as more than 300 dippers gathered at Newquay Harbour for the eleventh annual New Year’s Day “Dip for CLIC”, raising over £2,500 for Young Lives vs Cancer. Undeterred by the rain, participants and spectators alike turned out in force, supporting the children’s cancer charity with enthusiasm and cheer.

A Colourful Start to 2025

Some dippers embraced the event’s fun atmosphere by donning vibrant fancy dress costumes and eye-catching swimwear. A spokesperson for the Newquay Young Lives vs Cancer fundraising group said: “It is fantastic that so many members of our community support our event and what a great way to start 2025. Some of our dippers have taken part since the very first dip, and it is great to see so many old friends return time and time again. Each year we have dippers from the Newquay area and visitors from all over the country who include our event as part of their holiday activities.”

Community Spirit and Safety First

Sam Goldsworthy, High Sheriff of Cornwall, along with Newquay’s Town Crier, led the countdown that saw the dippers charge into the chilly water under the watchful eyes of the Newquay Surf Life Saving Club lifeguards. The cheering crowd stayed until the last swimmer emerged, applauding the participants’ bravery.

The organisers, Jos and Andy Cole, extended their gratitude to the many volunteers and groups who ensured the event’s success, including Beaches & Cream Newquay WI, Newquay Harbour Mission, Newquay Surf Life Saving Club, Newquay Rowing Club, Newquay Harbour Master, Newquay RNLI, and local businesses such as Starts Estate Agents, Bookers, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, and Blystra Signs.

Making a Difference

With the £2,500 raised from entry fees, sponsorships, and donations, the funds will go towards supporting children undergoing cancer treatment and their families. Young Lives vs Cancer provides vital care and assistance, including tailored psychosocial support through dedicated social workers.

The charity works tirelessly to ensure children and young people facing cancer receive the right care and support when they need it most. To learn more about their work, visit Young Lives vs Cancer’s website.

Plans for 2026 Already Underway

Now a key part of Newquay’s “Twixmas” calendar, the organisers are already planning for an even bigger and better event on 1st January 2026. Locals and visitors alike are encouraged to mark the date and challenge themselves in support of this meaningful cause.

Young Lives vs Cancer continues to make a significant impact, addressing not only the medical but also the emotional and social challenges faced by children and their families as they navigate cancer treatment.
