Newquay Zoo Celebrates Birth of Rare Philippine Spotted Deer Fawn
Newquay Zoo has joyfully announced the birth of a rare Philippine spotted deer fawn. The fawn, born to parents Belle and Neil at the start of April, marks the couple’s second offspring following the birth of Dylan in the summer of 2022.
This week, visitors to the zoo had their first glimpse of the young deer as it ventured outside for the first time.
Endangered Species
The Philippine spotted deer, also known as Alfred’s deer, is classified as ‘Endangered’ on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. They are considered one of the world’s most endangered deer species, primarily due to their limited habitat, severe habitat destruction, and fragmentation. These deer are native to only two Philippine islands and face threats from hunting for game, meat, and the pet trade, despite being fully protected by law.
Breeding Programme Success
Newquay Zoo is part of an ex-situ breeding programme run by the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA). This programme aims to increase understanding of the Philippine spotted deer and boost their global population. The successful breeding of these deer at Newquay Zoo is exemplified by the latest addition to their family, highlighting the zoo’s crucial role in the conservation efforts for this endangered species.
A Promising Future
The new fawn has settled in well, often seen cuddling with its family or following its mother, Belle, around the enclosure. The sight of this rare deer venturing outside for the first time is a promising indication of its health and confidence. As Newquay Zoo continues its efforts to protect and breed the Philippine spotted deer, the arrival of this new fawn provides hope for the future of the species.
Stay tuned for more updates on this remarkable story of conservation and the efforts to save one of the world’s most endangered deer species.
