Newquay Woman Takes on Litter Pick Challenge to Support Tent For Lent Appeal

To support people around the world who are left without shelter following disasters, Jenn Sandiford of Newquay has taken a novel approach this Lent season. Every day throughout Lent, Jenn, accompanied by her dog Groot, will be engaging in a litter picking challenge around Newquay to raise funds for the international disaster relief charity ShelterBox’s Tent for Lent Appeal. This appeal aims to provide emergency shelter and essential aid items to families displaced by conflict and disaster.

ShelterBox is known for its global efforts in offering emergency shelter and crucial supplies to those uprooted from their homes due to disasters. The charity has initiated the Tent for Lent Appeal to draw attention and raise necessary funds to support its mission. It encourages people to participate in fundraising activities during Lent or to donate money saved from giving up luxuries to assist those in urgent need of shelter and emergency aid.

Jenn, 38, inspired by the urgent need to address environmental and humanitarian issues simultaneously, has committed to completing 40 litter picks over the Lent period. She highlighted the interconnectedness of environmental impact and its disproportionate effects on poorer countries, which are more vulnerable to climate instability and extreme weather conditions. Through her efforts, Jenn aims to raise awareness about environmental damage and support ShelterBox in its crucial work.

Jenn, who works for ShelterBox supporting volunteers, is passionate about outdoor activities and community involvement. She participates in several community choirs and enjoys spending time at the sea and with her loved ones. By undertaking this challenge, Jenn hopes to set an example for environmental stewardship and aid ShelterBox in its ongoing humanitarian efforts.

ShelterBox is currently responding to 12 disasters worldwide and has confirmed its support in Gaza in collaboration with Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP). The charity will provide emergency shelter aid, including blankets, mattresses, and kitchen sets, to thousands of people to help them survive adverse weather conditions.

Louisa Arnold, Community Fundraising Officer at ShelterBox, expressed gratitude towards Jenn and others who contribute to raising awareness and funds through creative means. The Tent for Lent Appeal has already seen participation from nearly 50 individuals and community groups, with activities ranging from giving up beds to saving money by foregoing favourite snacks. Arnold emphasised that there is still time for others to join the cause and make a significant impact on the lives of those in dire conditions.

Donations towards the Tent for Lent Appeal can support families in various ways, from providing shelter tool kits and water filters to supplying tents.
