In a coordinated rescue effort on Thursday, 7 March, volunteers from Newquay RNLI were dispatched to aid a fisherman experiencing a severe health issue aboard a commercial fishing vessel.

The operation was initiated following a distress call to the Falmouth Coastguard, indicating that a man had become unwell with an ear infection, leading to significant discomfort and dizziness.

Acting on medical advice that the fisherman needed to be hospitalised within six hours, the coastguard contacted the duty Launch Authority at Newquay RNLI Lifeboat Station. Given the vessel’s one-hour distance from the station, a plan was formulated to maintain constant communication with the coastguard and to prepare for immediate action as the fishing boat neared.

The rescue operation officially began at 1.09pm, with the launch of Newquay’s Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat. Despite challenging weather conditions, including a near gale wind force seven, the lifeboat, manned by three volunteers, raced to the fisherman’s aid, leaving a seat vacant for the ill man.

Upon arrival at 1.35pm, the situation had escalated with the fisherman falling unconscious, prompting an urgent response from Falmouth Coastguard. They dispatched Rescue 924, a helicopter, to airlift the casualty to the hospital. The Newquay Lifeboat crew stood by during the airlift operation, ensuring the fisherman’s safe transfer to the helicopter.

The mission concluded with the fisherman en route to the hospital for necessary treatment, and the Newquay Lifeboat volunteers returning to the harbor at 2.23pm. Back onshore, the dedicated shore crew promptly refuelled and cleaned the lifeboat, ensuring its readiness for future rescues.

This successful operation highlights the critical role of RNLI volunteers and the effectiveness of coordinated rescue efforts between the lifeboat crews and coastguard services. The Newquay RNLI extends its best wishes to the fisherman for a swift and full recovery.
