A set of well-known palm trees, which have greeted thousands of visitors arriving by train to Newquay for over 30 years, have been given a new home. The trees, once a familiar sight near Newquay Railway Station, were removed as part of works to bring back a second platform at the station.
The trees have now been relocated to Lappa Valley, a family-friendly tourist attraction located near St Newlyn East. They now line the railway of the Newlyn Downs Branchline, adding to the scenic charm of the site.
A New Home for Newquay’s Palm Trees
“We’re really pleased to be in a position to give these palm trees a new home,” said Ben Harding, Operations Director at Lappa Valley. He continued: “From our research, we believe the trees have been welcoming visitors to Newquay for over 30 years. Their new home is very fitting, as our railway runs along the trackbed of the former Chacewater branchline, which ended at Newquay station.”
Lappa Valley, known for its three railways and other family-friendly activities, is set in the Cornish countryside and continues to celebrate the area’s rich heritage. The attraction is based around the historic East Wheal Rose Mine, giving visitors a mix of fun and history.
Collaboration with Network Rail
Ben also expressed his gratitude for the support received: “Thank you to Network Rail, and their contractors Colas for their help in transporting the trees to their new home.”
