Newquay Night Bus Service Helps Reduce Crime Over Summer
Over 600 passengers took advantage of the night bus service in Newquay this summer, with Devon & Cornwall Police reporting positive results. The service, which ran every Saturday night into Sunday morning from 6 July to 7 September, was part of an effort to reduce drink driving, anti-social behaviour (ASB), and violence against women and girls in the area.
Passenger Numbers and Routes
A total of 659 passengers used the Newquay service, operated by First Bus, on a circular route connecting Newquay, St Columb Major, Indian Queens, and Newquay bus station. The night buses, which charged just £2 for a single ticket, were a part of a broader initiative across both Devon and Cornwall. In total, more than 2,000 people used the night bus services in both regions.
Impact on Crime and ASB
Police reported a 10% drop in crime in Newquay compared to the same period last summer, with only one incident of ASB reported during the bus service’s operation. The bus service also contributed to a reduction in drink driving offences. Local CCTV operators noted that town centre areas cleared out more quickly once pubs and clubs had closed, contributing to a safer environment for residents and visitors alike.
Future Plans
The night bus service, which was funded by local councils, Devon & Cornwall Police, and Crimestoppers, has been considered a success, and there is hope that further funding will be secured to run the service again in the coming months.
This service helped ensure the streets of Newquay remained safer during the busy summer months, providing a vital alternative for those on a night out.
