Newquay Minor Injury Unit Adjusts Opening Hours Amid Staffing Changes and Equipment Upgrades

Published On: 18 March 2024Last Updated: 18 March 2024By

Newquay Minor Injury Unit has announced temporary changes to its operating hours, effective from this week.

The facility will now welcome patients from 8 am to 8 pm, Friday through Tuesday, closing its doors on Wednesdays and Thursdays. These adjustments come in response to staffing shifts and an ongoing effort to enhance service quality with new digital x-ray equipment.

Matron Rebecca explained the decision as a necessary measure following the departure of several team members. “We have had to make what we hope will be a short-term change to our opening hours,” she said. The silver lining, according to Rebecca, is the successful recruitment drive that has brought in new practitioners to the unit, promising a return to full operation once training is completed.

The Trust’s website provides details of the live opening and waiting times for all minor injury units.

The reduced hours mean the unit will continue to offer its services five days a week, treating a variety of minor illnesses and injuries, including:

  • Sprains and strains
  • Minor fractures
  • Traumatic wound infections (not surgical wounds)
  • Minor burns and scalds
  • Head injuries (where the person has not been unconscious)
  • Insect and animal bites and stings
  • Minor eye injuries
  • Cuts, bruising, and grazes
  • Suspected infections, for example, eye, ear, skin, and throat (when GPs are closed). Find your nearest pharmacy and check opening hours.

Residents in need of minor injury services during the unit’s closure can seek treatment at alternative units in Bodmin, Camborne Redruth, and St Austell, which offer extended hours to accommodate patient needs. Visit the Trust’s website for live opening and waiting times. People who are unsure which service is best can use the NHS 111 symptom checker or call 111, 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

Additionally, the ongoing refurbishment of the x-ray department marks a significant upgrade for the unit. The introduction of new digital x-ray equipment is expected to provide clinicians with access to faster, higher-quality images, enhancing diagnostic capabilities and patient care.

For current opening hours and waiting times, the Trust advises visiting its website. It also recommends utilising the NHS 111 symptom checker or calling 111 for guidance on the most appropriate service for their needs. In cases of life or limb-threatening conditions, calling 999 remains the advised course of action.

This period of transition aims to maintain the high standards of care provided by the Newquay Minor Injury Unit while adapting to internal changes and improving facilities. The community looks forward to the full resumption of services and benefits from the technological advancements underway.
