Newquay Launches Night Buses to Ensure Safe Summer Nights

Published On: 4 July 2024Last Updated: 4 July 2024By

Party-goers in Newquay can now enjoy a safer night out this summer thanks to the introduction of night buses.

New Service Details

From 6th July until 7th September 2024, new night bus services will be available every Saturday, providing a convenient and cost-effective way for revellers to get home safely. Following a successful trial in Barnstaple in December 2023, Devon & Cornwall Police have collaborated with partners to bring this service to Newquay, aiming to reduce drink and drug-related incidents.

Keeping Newquay Safe

Alison Hernandez, Police and Crime Commissioner for Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, highlighted the importance of this service. “With the summer weather approaching, there can often be the temptation to drive after consuming too much alcohol,” she said. “This bus service offers people of all ages the opportunity to leave their cars at home, safe in the knowledge they have a cheap and convenient way of getting home safely.”

Tickets for the night buses cost just £2 for a single journey, making it an affordable option for everyone. Full timetables are available on the First Bus website under Route N1.

Enhancing Public Safety

Inspector Andy Wills from the Barnstaple area, who supports the introduction of these buses, emphasised the dangers of alcohol and drugs. “Alcohol and drugs affect a person’s ability to accurately judge a situation, which can contribute to issues such as drink or drug driving, violence against women and girls, and anti-social behaviour.”

By providing a reliable transport option, Devon & Cornwall Police hope to mitigate these risks, ensuring that everyone can enjoy their night out and return home safely.

Supporting Women’s Safety

Commissioner Alison Hernandez is also committed to improving female safety and tackling violence in communities. “Getting home safely, whether from work or a night out in town, should not be a nice-to-have, it should be a given,” she stated. “All women and girls deserve to stay safe at night and feel confident that their safety is our concern.”

A Collaborative Effort

The night bus service is funded by Devon County Council, North Devon Council, Torridge District Council, Cornwall County Council, OPCC, and CrimeStoppers. The collaboration between these entities demonstrates a strong community effort to ensure public safety during the busy summer months.

Stay safe and enjoy your summer nights with peace of mind, knowing that Newquay’s night buses are here to help you get home safely.
