Newquay Community Gathers to Learn About Loggerhead Turtle Conservation Efforts

Published On: 23 February 2024Last Updated: 26 February 2024By

Last night, members of the Newquay community had the unique opportunity to delve into the fascinating world of loggerhead turtles and the critical conservation efforts aiding their journey to recovery. Hosted by the Newquay University Centre Cornwall College, the informative event was spearheaded by the team from Blue Reef Aquarium Newquay, offering attendees a deep dive into the life and challenges faced by these marine creatures.

The evening was not just an educational experience but also a clarion call to the public on the importance of conservation and the proper steps to take when encountering a distressed turtle. A key takeaway from the event was the urging of the public not to return these vulnerable turtles to the water if found stranded or in distress. The condition of these turtles, often exhausted and in poor health, requires specialised care to gradually rehabilitate them back to health, focusing on slowly reintroducing them to eating and swimming.

Abby Rose, representing the efforts of the Blue Reef Aquarium Newquay, played a pivotal role in the evening, providing insightful answers to a myriad of questions from the engaged audience. Her expertise shed light on the delicate balance required in caring for loggerhead turtles and highlighted the importance of public awareness and involvement in conservation efforts.

The gathering served as a testament to the Newquay community’s growing interest and participation in marine conservation, further encouraged by the support and educational outreach of local institutions such as Newquay University Centre Cornwall College and dedicated teams like that of the Blue Reef Aquarium Newquay.

As the night concluded, attendees left with a renewed sense of responsibility and a deeper understanding of the complexities involved in marine conservation, especially concerning loggerhead turtles. The event underscored the critical need for community involvement and the impact of collective efforts in ensuring the survival and thriving of marine life.
