On Saturday, 10th February 2024, Newquay Coastguard Rescue Team was actively involved in two separate incidents along the coast, demonstrating their commitment to public safety and swift response to emergencies.
The first call to action, Tasking #10, occurred at 15:53hrs when the team was dispatched to assist the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust with a casualty at Great Western Beach. Upon arrival, the coastguard discovered that the individual had already been transported to the hospital with friends.
Later in the day, at 17:37hrs, the team received another alert, Tasking #11, concerning an unattended surfboard spotted in the water near Tolcarne Beach. This prompted concerns about a possible person in distress. Newquay RNLI Lifeboats were also mobilised to the scene. The lifeboat crew successfully recovered the surfboard, and a thorough search of the surrounding area was conducted to ensure no individuals were in danger. After a comprehensive search, all teams involved were stood down as no further signs of distress were found.
The Newquay Coastguard Rescue Team extended their gratitude to the staff at Lusty Glaze & Tolcarne Beach for their invaluable assistance throughout the day. These incidents highlight the importance of community vigilance and the effective coordination between the coastguard, RNLI lifeboats, and local beach staff in ensuring the safety of beachgoers and the swift response to potential emergencies.
The coastguard reminds the public to remain vigilant and to dial 999 to request the coastguard if they see someone in difficulty along the coast, reinforcing their message to stay safe.
