Firefighters are currently on the scene of a significant fire in Cornwall, having battled the intense blaze throughout the night. The fire erupted yesterday afternoon (Sunday, June 30th) at the Hotel California in Newquay, prompting a rapid response from local fire crews.
Challenging Conditions for Firefighters
The firefighters faced considerable challenges due to the size and deteriorating condition of the building. Around 7 pm, the roof collapsed, and missing floorboards forced the crews to combat the flames from outside. Despite these obstacles, they managed to contain the fire just before midnight.

Intense Efforts to Contain the Fire
The firefighting efforts were extensive, with ten fire engines initially dispatched to Pentire Crescent after thick black smoke was reported billowing from the hotel’s windows at 3:56 pm. Eyewitnesses described seeing smoke from miles away.
Concerns About Potential Occupants
Initially, there were concerns that someone might be trapped inside the burning building. The Hotel California had been closed since the end of 2021 and had fallen into a state of disrepair. The derelict hotel was occasionally used by homeless individuals, raising fears about potential occupants. However, these concerns were not confirmed, and it is believed that no one was inside at the time of the fire.
Continued Presence of Fire Crews
As of 6:30 am this morning (July 1st), the response has been scaled back to three fire engines, but crews remain on site to ensure the fire is fully extinguished and to prevent any further spread. Cornwall Fire and Rescue issued a statement this morning, saying: “Crews have worked overnight to ensure good progress is being made. Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service still remain on the incident ground, however attendance has been scaled back.”
Ongoing Efforts and Public Safety
Firefighters continue their diligent work to secure the area and address any remaining hotspots. The situation remains under control, and emergency services are focused on ensuring public safety while assessing the full extent of the damage caused by the fire.
