Toddler remembered as charity event prepares for colourful comeback

A much-loved Newquay charity event is making a big return this week after five years away, in memory of a local toddler whose story touched hearts across Cornwall and beyond.

The Joe Way Paddle for Life is back this Thursday 26th June at Newquay Harbour, ready to bring colour, music and community spirit back to the water. First launched in 2008, the event was inspired by Joe Way, a local boy who died aged just four after surviving multiple life-threatening conditions.

Joe was born with Angelman’s Syndrome and had overcome meningitis, a severe skin reaction called Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS), and several superbugs. He sadly died from complete organ failure in May 2008 after a second bout of SJS.

Later that year, Newquay lifeguards held the first memorial paddle in his name. Over the following years, the Paddle for Life became a highlight of the town’s summer calendar, raising over £180,000 for more than 20 different charities through 11 annual paddles and nearly 100 fundraising events.

After being paused in 2020 due to Covid and a serious family illness, the event is finally returning.

Joe honoured by Surfers Against Sewage

To mark what would have been Joe’s 21st birthday last September, Surfers Against Sewage has paid tribute to his legacy by adding his name to the “Sentinels of the Sea” plaque at their headquarters in St Agnes.

Joe’s mum, Claire Way, said:

“Joe loved water and the ocean and Surfers Against Sewage have been a charity we have supported since the first paddle in 2008. It was a real eye opener to see the commitment and scale of the charity’s work, and got us excited to get more involved.”

The charity has also donated tickets for the SAS Ball in July to the event’s online prize draw. Entries can be made at: https://go.rallyup.com/joewaypaddleforlife2025

The Way family are asking as many people as possible to share the link on social media to help mark Joe’s birthday and support local causes.

What to expect at this year’s event

The Thursday afternoon and evening line-up includes:

  • Skydivers from Cornwall Skydive, landing on Towan Beach while flying Joe’s flag

  • Live music from Lee Quinney Sings, Oll an Gwella and Amplify Southwest DJ sets

  • A memorial paddle by RNLI beach lifeguards

  • Around 400 paddlers expected to take part

  • Charity and food stands dotted around the harbour

The event is organised in partnership with Newquay Towan Blystra Lions Club and Surf Life Saving Cornwall, with support from local businesses, surf clubs and charities.
