On Friday, 14 June at 11:30 am, a heroic act by an RNLI lifeguard at Porth Beach, Newquay, Cornwall, resulted in the rescue of two young children who had been swept out to sea.

Caught in a Dangerous Current

The incident occurred when the children, who had entered the water by the headland at high tide, were immediately caught by the strong current and dragged 200 metres out to sea. Panic and screams from the children alerted RNLI lifeguard Jason Walsh, who sprang into action.

Swift and Brave Rescue

Jason paddled out on a rescue board, covering the 200-metre distance to reach the distressed children. Demonstrating skill and bravery, he was able to safely bring them back to shore, reuniting them with their anxious parents.

RNLI’s Safety Message

Lewis Timson, RNLI Lead Lifeguard Supervisor for Newquay, praised Jason’s quick response and highlighted the dangers present in certain areas of Porth Beach. He reiterated the importance of adhering to RNLI advice:

“Jason did a great job in reacting quickly to rescue the two children who had got into difficulty in a dangerous area of Porth beach. We’d like to remind people that if you are planning to go into the water to follow the RNLI lifeguards’ advice, to always visit a lifeguarded beach and swim and bodyboard between the red and yellow flags as that is the safest place to do so.”

Vital Safety Tips from RNLI

The RNLI also shared crucial safety advice for those who might unexpectedly fall into the water. Their key message is to “FLOAT TO LIVE.” If you find yourself in such a situation, fight the instinct to thrash around. Instead, lean back, with your ears submerged in the water, extend your arms and legs, and float.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers of the sea and the essential role lifeguards play in ensuring the safety of beachgoers.
