Heroic RNLI Lifeguard Remembered After Sudden Passing at 59
The RNLI community across the South West has paid tribute to former lifeguard Rodney MacDonald, who sadly passed away on 1st March at the age of 59.
A Lifeguard Who Made History
Rodney, originally from Sydney, Australia, served as an RNLI lifeguard in the Newquay area from 2001 until 2018. In May 2003, he became the first lifeguard to be awarded an RNLI Bronze Medal for Gallantry.
The prestigious award came after a remarkable off-duty rescue at Fistral Beach in October 2002. With no rescue equipment, Rodney braved large breaking surf to save a badly injured swimmer who was being thrown against rocks. His selfless actions ensured the swimmer made it back to shore safely.
Tributes from Colleagues
Steve Instance, RNLI Water Safety Lead in the South West, was Beach Rescue General Manager at the time. Remembering Rodney, he said:
“Rod was a great character and took everything in his stride. Upon being awarded his medal, Rod described the ceremony at the Barbican Centre in London as ‘nice’. Once the presentation was over, he was soon out of his formal clothes and back into his more familiar attire of shorts and T-shirt. He had a great way of making everyone around him feel relaxed in his company.”
Rodney’s impact stretched far beyond the beaches of Newquay, with many friends across the world mourning his loss. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
