Go Skate Day Held at Concrete Waves in Newquay Despite Stormy Start
Concrete Waves came alive as skaters and supporters turned out for a day of unity, talent and giving
Stormy start didn’t stop the show
The Go Skate Day event at Concrete Waves in Newquay nearly didn’t happen the way organisers had hoped. Held on Saturday 21st June, the day began under heavy rain and a thunderstorm, with the team setting up from as early as 7am.
Despite the weather delaying the start of the skating, it gave organisers valuable time to get the venue ready. By 11.30am, the skies cleared, just as forecasted—and the event quickly transformed into a lively celebration of skateboarding and community spirit.
“We all stood in the rain and thunder early on, holding onto the belief that the weather would break—and it did,” said one organiser. “Once the skating started, everything just clicked. It was more than we ever could have imagined.”
A day of skating, connection and support
Once the skate jam kicked off, the day ran smoothly. Skaters of all ages and abilities turned up to take part, with a strong sense of positivity and support running through the event.
A standout moment was the fundraiser organised by Jake and Beth in aid of the Ben Raymes Foundation—a charity that holds deep meaning for many in the local skateboarding scene. Families, friends and newcomers all came together to back the cause.
“It shows what skateboarding can really do,” one attendee noted. “The way it unites people and makes a difference in lives is incredible.”
Local skater Pollen added:
“The turnout was amazing—more than expected. It was great to see the whole community come together, from kids to long-time skaters, supporting a great cause.”
Gratitude and plans for next year
The smooth running of the day was made possible by volunteers, sponsors and community support. Organisers were quick to thank everyone involved—from local businesses to individuals who gave their time and energy.
“We’re truly overwhelmed with the love and support,” said the team. “This was more than just a skate event—it was a celebration of what makes Newquay so special. We can’t thank everyone enough.”
Plans are already in motion for next year’s Go Skate Day, with hopes to make it even bigger.
