From Struggling to Strong: What’s Behind Treviglas Academy’s Remarkable Turnaround?

Published On: 3 April 2025Last Updated: 3 April 2025By

Treviglas Academy is celebrating a major milestone after being rated Good by Ofsted—an impressive leap forward from its previous Requires Improvement status.

The latest inspection recognised the school’s transformation under new leadership, citing strong direction, a renewed ethos, and an ambitious curriculum as key factors in the turnaround.

A New Era for Treviglas

Lead Inspector Victoria Griffin praised the progress made, noting: “The school has improved significantly since the previous inspection. Pupils are proud to be part of the school community. The school has high expectations of pupils’ conduct, balancing these with warmth and mutual respect. Increasing numbers of pupils make good academic progress through the curriculum, learning in a calm and purposeful environment.”

Parents were said to be “united” in their praise for the changes brought in by Headteacher James Rogers and his team, with many expressing how the school has become a place where children want to learn.

Building Character and Confidence

The Ofsted report also highlights the school’s commitment to character development, calling aspects of its work “exemplary.” An extensive range of extra-curricular opportunities—such as music, sport, and drama—are helping to create a thriving school culture, alongside a growing emphasis on student leadership and responsibility.

The curriculum was described as “highly ambitious,” with a reading programme that’s “exceptionally strong.” Pupils who need extra support receive timely help with comprehension, fluency, and phonics.

Inspector Griffin added: “The school accurately identifies pupils’ needs. Recent changes to how these pupils are supported and monitored are already having a positive impact.”

Support from The Roseland Trust

The transformation at Treviglas has also been supported by The Roseland Trust, which has focused on staff development, strengthening teaching and subject knowledge across the school.

Trust CEO Chris Challis said: “Moving from Requires Improvement to Good demonstrates our commitment to providing high-quality, inclusive education where every student thrives. The report highlights our school’s exemplary character development, strong leadership driven by moral purpose, and an exceptionally strong reading curriculum.”

Chris also shared the words of a parent who said: “The school is now an environment where my children feel they can thrive both inside and outside the classroom.”

Looking Ahead

James Rogers thanked the entire school community, saying: “This achievement is a testament to the hard work of our entire school community—our staff, governors, and, most importantly, the children. I also want to thank our parents and carers for their ongoing support, which plays a crucial role in our success.”

While celebrating the Good rating, Treviglas is not standing still. Ofsted identified areas where the school can continue to develop, particularly in ensuring consistent delivery across all areas of the curriculum.

With a multi-million-pound refurbishment currently underway, the first phase of the school’s new building project is expected to be completed this summer—further strengthening its commitment to offering an outstanding environment for learning.
