Emergency Response Mobilised in Newquay After False Alarm on the River Gannel
On the evening of Monday, 19th August, Newquay RNLI Lifeboat volunteers were called into action following reports of a woman in distress along the banks of the River Gannel. The alert was raised at 5.16 pm by a member of the public who reported seeing a female stranded and waving for help. The situation quickly prompted a coordinated response involving multiple local rescue teams.
Extensive Search Operation
The RNLI’s Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat was promptly launched, joining RNLI Lifeguards from Crantock, who had already conducted a thorough search using their Rescue Water Craft. Meanwhile, the Newquay Coastguard Search and Rescue Team worked on the ground, locating the informant who provided precise details about the sighting.
Despite the combined efforts of the rescue teams, no individual was found in difficulty at the reported location. After a thorough search of the area, it was determined that the call was a false alarm, although made with good intent. All emergency services were stood down shortly after.
A Quick Return to Readiness
The RNLI lifeboat crew returned to the Newquay Lifeboat Station at 5.45 pm, where the lifeboat was promptly made ready for service, ensuring that the team could respond to any further emergencies without delay.
Members of the public are reminded to dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard in any coastal emergency. Although this particular incident was a false alarm, the swift response by all teams involved highlights the importance of taking every report seriously to ensure public safety.
