Drastic Measures: Ugly Gate Blocks Access to Popular Whipsiderry Beach
A newly installed gate and fence now prevent public access to Whipsiderry Beach, a popular destination in Newquay, Cornwall.
The barrier, designed to restrict entry to the beach via the steps, has been put in place to protect the public from the unstable cliff face above. Despite the necessity, the gate’s unattractive appearance has sparked considerable local discontent.

Temporary Solution, Long-term Discussions
According to Save Whipsiderry Cliffs, this measure is only temporary. Next week, a meeting between Newquay Town Council and Cornwall Council will discuss long-term solutions for safe beach access. The group promises to keep the public informed about the outcome and is committed to pressuring the council to reinstate and maintain public access to the beach.
Emergency Measures
Cornwall Council advises that anyone trapped on the beach or steps due to incoming tides should call 999 and request the Coastguard, who will attend and open the gate. This temporary solution is a significant loss to locals, tourists, and businesses who value Whipsiderry Beach as an important public space and asset.
Community Involvement
Save Whipsiderry Cliffs encourages the public to express their concerns and worries by emailing Cornwall Council representatives Carol Maclellan and Jon Mitchell (carol.maclellan@cornwall.gov.uk & jon.mitchell@cornwall.gov.uk) . Save Whipsiderry Cliffs believe its important Cornwall Council understand, the loss of Whipsiderry does not just affect a bunch of disgruntled local residents, but also businesses, tourists, and the wider Newquay & Cornwall community
What’s Next?
As the councils meet to determine a long-term solution, the community remains hopeful for a resolution that balances safety and access. For now, the unsightly gate stands as a temporary guardian, safeguarding the public from the dangers posed by the unstable cliffs above.
