DISC Newquay, a local volunteer group, was honoured with the King’s Award for Voluntary Service, the highest accolade given to volunteer groups across the UK. The award, equivalent to an MBE and awarded for life, recognises volunteer-driven groups making an outstanding impact in their communities.
DISC Newquay, a charitable organisation deeply rooted in the heart of Newquay, Cornwall, is dedicated to supporting local families and individuals facing challenges, especially during times of crisis. With a focus on enhancing the lives of those in the community, DISC Newquay offers a range of vital services, including food provision, advice, and crucial signposting to specialised support for issues like debt, housing, refuge, addiction, and mental health. Their collaborative approach involves networking with other agencies, ensuring comprehensive support for a diverse group of beneficiaries including families, single parents, youngsters, the elderly, the homeless, and those at risk of homelessness. Driven by a team of compassionate volunteers, DISC Newquay stands as a pillar of support and service, committed to making a tangible difference in the lives of those in need within Newquay and the broader Cornwall area.
The ceremony, held at the Sandy Lodge Hotel in Newquay, was attended by friends and supporters of DISC Newquay. The group’s achievements were highlighted on national television, with ITV covering the event, ensuring that their inspiring story reached households across the country.
The King’s Award for Voluntary Service, originally established in 2002 as the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, was renamed following the accession of King Charles III. This year marks the first presentation of the award under its new name. The award celebrates groups that demonstrate exceptional dedication and commitment to their local communities.
DISC Newquay joins a prestigious list of awardees, including groups like Greyabbey & District Community Association in County Down, Airdrie Community School Uniform Bank in Lanarkshire, The Northumberland Log Bank, and the Lee Gardens Pool Committee in Mid Glamorgan. These groups have made significant contributions in areas ranging from environmental work to supporting vulnerable households.
The award presentation was followed by a certificate bearing His Majesty’s signature, handed over by the Lord-Lieutenant at the locally arranged event. Additionally, the awardees received invitations to attend a Royal Garden Party.
As DISC Newquay returns to its regular activities, the recognition serves as a testament to the power of volunteerism and the profound impact it can have on communities. The King’s Award for Voluntary Service continues to shine a light on the extraordinary efforts of volunteer groups across the UK, inspiring others to contribute to their communities.
