Clemo Books In Newquay Gears Up for First Ever Independent Bookshop Week with Exciting Events
Newquay’s Clemo Books is all set to celebrate its first Independent Bookshop Week from Saturday, 15 June to Saturday, 22 June.
The independent bookshop, which opened its doors in November 2023, has planned a series of events aimed at engaging the local community and celebrating the joy of reading.
A Week Full of Activities
Clemo Books has lined up a variety of activities for book lovers of all ages. The festivities kick off with an author visit from Tracey Williams, known for her acclaimed book “Adrift: The Curious Tale of The Lego Lost at Sea.” Tracey will be signing copies of her book and experiencing the role of a bookseller from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm on Saturday, 15 June.
Young People’s Poetry Competition
One of the highlights of the week is the Clemo Books Young People’s Poetry Competition. Inspired by Tracey Williams’ beachcombing habits, the theme for the competition is ‘found.’ Young poets are invited to submit their entries, with the chance to win gift vouchers. The winning poem will be proudly displayed in the bookshop’s window for the Newquay community to read. Judging the competition will be local writer and poet Lucy Beckley, alongside Tracey Williams and bookseller Jaimie Poyner. The competition is open for entries now and will close at midday on Saturday, 22 June.
Late Night Shopping and More
To mark the celebratory week, Clemo Books will host a special late-night shopping event on Saturday, 15 June. Customers can enjoy extended hours at the bookshop, with a complimentary glass of bubbly served with every book purchased as a token of gratitude for their support over the past six months.
Join the Celebration
Jaimie Poyner, owner and bookseller at Clemo Books, expressed excitement about the upcoming week. “Our first Independent Bookshop Week on the high street feels like quite a sentimental milestone. We’re so pleased to be part of the national campaign which champions the importance of bookshops on the high street, highlighting the vibrancy and cultural opportunities they can bring to towns and their communities. The bunting is going up and we hope people get involved with Clemo Books during our first Independent Bookshop Week!”
