Busy Weekend for Newquay Coastguard: Kayakers Rescued, Missing Kayak Found, and Injured Surfer Treated

Published On: 8 July 2024Last Updated: 8 July 2024By

This past weekend was a busy one for the Newquay Coastguard Rescue Team, who responded to three separate incidents on the beaches of Newquay. The series of events highlighted the importance of vigilance and prompt response in ensuring the safety of those enjoying the coastal waters.

Saturday Rescue: Stranded Kayakers Saved

On Saturday, 6th July, at 17:30, the Newquay Coastguard Rescue Team was called to assist the RNLI Lifeguards at Crantock Beach. Unattended belongings found on the beach sparked an investigation, which led to the discovery that the items belonged to two individuals who had paddled out to Goose Rock. The pair had attempted to scale the rock but found themselves in difficulty while trying to return to shore. Their kayak capsized, and they were left stranded. The Newquay RNLI Lifeboats were promptly dispatched, rescuing the stranded kayakers and bringing them safely to Newquay Harbour.

Missing Kayak Mystery Solved

The following morning, on Sunday, 7th July, at 10:52, the coastguard team received reports of an inflatable kayak washed up on the rocks at East Pentire. Believing this to be the same kayak involved in Saturday’s incident, the team conducted a search of the area. Upon arrival, it became clear that the kayak was no longer there. It was later confirmed that the owners had retrieved it, resolving the mystery.

Evening Emergency: Injured Surfer at Fistral Beach

Later on Sunday, at 19:02, the team was again called into action, this time to assist the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust with an injured surfer at Fistral Beach. The coastguard team quickly located the casualty and administered first aid. The surfer was then handed over to the ambulance service for further medical attention. The team wished the injured surfer a speedy recovery.

Stay Safe on the Coast

These incidents serve as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of the sea and the importance of being prepared and cautious. The Newquay Coastguard Rescue Team urges anyone who sees someone in difficulty along the coast to dial 998 and ask for the coastguard.

Stay safe and enjoy the beauty of Newquay’s beaches responsibly.
