Big Newquay Monthly Market Boosted by £42,366 Grant
A new monthly street market in Newquay is set to become a year-round attraction, thanks to a £42,366 grant from Cornwall Council’s Community Levelling Up Programme. The initiative, spearheaded by Newquay Business Improvement District (Newquay BID), aims to support local businesses and increase footfall in the town centre.
Support from the Community Levelling Up Programme
The Community Levelling Up Programme, funded by the UK government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, has provided the necessary equipment for the market. This includes gazebos, weights and tie-down kits, and trestle tables. Managed by Cornwall Council on behalf of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, the fund aims to boost local economies and community projects.
Mark Warren, Newquay BID Manager, expressed his enthusiasm: “This month we used our fantastic new gazebos funded by Cornwall Council through the Community Levelling Up Programme, at our monthly Big Newquay market. This is a huge opportunity for locals and businesses to enjoy and grow these monthly markets and to drive footfall all year round.”
A New Platform for Local Makers and Producers
The market, running from April to December, showcases 40-50 local makers, producers, and small businesses. In collaboration with Cornwall Shop Small and Newquay Farmers Market, these events aim to provide a vibrant platform for local entrepreneurs.
The newly acquired equipment is not limited to the monthly market. It will also support other outdoor markets and events in the area and will be available for hire to local businesses and community groups.
Driving Economic Growth in Newquay
Louis Gardner, Cornwall Council portfolio holder for economy and Cornwall councillor for Newquay Central and Pentire, highlighted the broader impact of the project: “This project puts the local communities at the heart of delivering an initiative that extends the opportunity to trade beyond the usual seasonal activity. This will help reignite the potential of the high street all year round.”
With plans to include live music and family-friendly activities, the market is expected to enhance the visitor experience, making it a destination event for both tourists and locals.
