As 2024 draws to a close, Newlyn Pier & Harbour Commissioners (NP&HC) have reflected on a busy and productive year at the port. With several projects underway and new plans on the horizon, the harbour’s future looks bright.

Transforming Newlyn Harbour and Sandy Cove

NP&HC is eagerly awaiting a technical report from WSP Limited, funded by £100,000 from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. The report will help shape short- and medium-term projects aimed at benefiting the local community and advancing the Commissioners’ long-term vision for Newlyn Harbour and Sandy Cove.

Marine Skills Centre Set to Begin Construction

Preliminary works are underway at The Strand to prepare for the construction of the Newlyn Marine Skills & Resource Centre. This much-needed centre of excellence for maritime expertise in Cornwall has received £1.75 million from the government’s Town Deal programme, part of a £21.5 million regeneration package for Penzance and Newlyn.

Preparatory works include the removal of portable buildings, vegetation clearance, and the relocation of power lines by the National Grid. Construction is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2025, with completion anticipated in 2026.

Restoring the Historic Old Quay

The restoration of Newlyn’s historic Old Quay is making progress, with work expected to be completed by March. Led by the West Cornwall Lugger Industry Trust Ltd and supported by various local organisations, the project includes replacing corroded ladders and mooring rings. This collaborative effort aims to revitalise the quay as a hub for local and visiting luggers, celebrating the port’s maritime heritage.

Enhancements Across the Harbour

NP&HC continues to improve the Newlyn Harbour estate. Recent upgrades include the replacement of the net sheds’ roof and the allocation of space for up to 20 new moorings for the under 8m fishing fleet. Ongoing maintenance has also addressed potholes and lighting issues.

However, challenges remain, such as ongoing issues with the harbour’s potable water supply. A localised fault has been identified, requiring a full review to ensure the supply is future-proofed before retesting by Cornwall Council. In the meantime, drinking water is available from the Cornish Ice Company on Mary Williams Pier.

A Year-End Celebration

Despite the challenges brought by Storm Darragh, the harbour successfully hosted the Newlyn Harbour Lights team and Father Christmas earlier this month. Paul Durkin, NP&HC’s Chairman, praised the efforts of Harbour Master and CEO Jonathan Poynter and his team, saying, “On behalf of my fellow Commissioners, I would like to thank Newlyn Harbour Master & CEO, Jonathan Poynter and his staff for all their hard work throughout the year and send our warmest season’s greetings to all our customers and everyone in our local community.”

Looking Ahead

NP&HC board meetings will now be held bi-monthly, on the first Friday of each month. Further updates on projects and developments will be shared through the harbour’s website and social media channels.

With exciting projects in the pipeline and a commitment to preserving Newlyn’s rich maritime history, the harbour continues to be a vital part of Cornwall’s future.
