Newlyn Harbour Seeks Three New Board Members – Could You Shape Its Future?
Newlyn Pier & Harbour Commissioners (NP&HC) are on the lookout for three new Board members at a crucial time in the port’s history. With major development plans in motion, these appointments will play a key role in shaping the future of one of England’s largest fishing harbours.
A Harbour with History and Ambition
Newlyn Harbour has been at the heart of Cornwall’s fishing industry for more than 140 years, supporting the local fleet, marine businesses, and visiting mariners. Now, the Harbour Commissioners are preparing for a bold phase of growth to ensure the estate remains fit for the future.
“Our development plan is driven by the changing needs of our core Harbour users, changes in technology, and changes to our climate and environment,” explains NP&HC Chairman, Paul Durkin.
The vision includes upgrading infrastructure, embracing renewable energy, and expanding within the marine sector to drive economic growth in West Cornwall. A key part of this transformation is the Newlyn Marine and Skills Resource Centre, a facility set to open in 2026 that will enhance maritime expertise in Cornwall. This project has secured £1.75 million from the government’s Town Deal programme, which is investing £21.5 million into regenerating Penzance and Newlyn.
Development Plans Already Underway
Beyond the Marine and Skills Resource Centre, NP&HC’s phased development strategy includes:
- Reclaiming land at Sandy Cove to create industrial units
- Upgrading existing infrastructure to support the fishing fleet
- Building a protective breakwater to safeguard the port for future generations
These plans aim to ensure Newlyn remains a thriving hub of economic activity while preserving its rich maritime heritage.
Who Should Apply?
Harbour Commissioners oversee strategic decisions, ensure compliance with the Port Marine Safety Code, and build relationships with key stakeholders. NP&HC is seeking individuals who are “motivated, forward-thinking and committed to achieving the full scope of our vision,” says Paul.
Applicants with expertise in environmental issues, commercial fishing, wholesale fish selling, marine leisure, funding, or investment are particularly encouraged to apply.
The roles include:
- One Commissioner for a three-year term (renewable up to three terms)
- One Commissioner to complete a term ending 30th May 2026 (renewable)
- One Commissioner for a one-year fixed term (renewable as needed)
