Jet Ski Drama: RNLI Penlee’s Swift Rescue Near St. Michael’s Mount

Published On: 9 May 2024Last Updated: 9 May 2024By

On the evening of 7th May 2024, a distress call was made when a man fell from his jet ski two miles south of St. Michael’s Mount.

Responding swiftly to a tasking request from Falmouth Coastguards, RNLI’s Penlee Lifeboat launched the Mollie and Ivor Dent. The inshore lifeboat, manned by four brave RNLI volunteers, raced across the bay under favourable weather conditions.

Dramatic Rescue

The crew discovered the individual struggling in the water, unable to remount his drifting jet ski. A second person on the jet ski, unable to assist due to the kill cord being attached to the driver, remained 300 meters away from the casualty. Fortuitously, a Royal Navy Merlin Helicopter, engaged in nearby training exercises, spotted the man in distress. They relayed the updated position to the coastguards, who in turn informed the Penlee Lifeboat crew.

Casualty’s Condition

Thankfully, the individual was equipped with a dry suit and lifejacket, which proved vital in preventing any need for medical assistance. After being safely returned to his jet ski, the inshore lifeboat escorted him to Penzance Harbour. There, the Penzance Coastguard Cliff Rescue team was ready to provide further support.

Lifeboat Readiness

Following the successful mission, the Penlee Inshore Lifeboat returned to Newlyn to refuel and prepare for future emergencies.

Safety First

Today’s incident serves as a critical reminder of the importance of safety measures while at sea. The casualty had taken significant precautions by wearing a dry suit and lifejacket and carrying a communication device. These actions were crucial in ensuring a quick rescue and safe return.

Key Safety Tips

  • Always attach the kill cord if available.
  • Wear a personal flotation device at all times.
  • Regularly maintain your engine.
  • Inform someone of your departure location and expected return time.

This incident highlights the effectiveness of safety equipment and the swift actions of emergency response teams in ensuring a safe conclusion to what could have been a life-threatening situation.
