Lanhydrock National Trust Unveils Unique Opportunity To View Historic Ceiling

Published On: 2 March 2024Last Updated: 2 March 2024By

Lanhydrock National Trust has opened its doors to a unique experience that invites the public to witness the restoration of its remarkable 17th-century plaster ceiling in the Long Gallery. For the first time in 400 years, visitors will have the opportunity to climb indoor scaffolding and observe conservators meticulously working to restore the ceiling’s original splendor.

The ceiling, known for its intricate designs depicting Biblical scenes, birds, and mythical beasts, has withstood the test of time, including surviving a devastating fire in 1881. The restoration process includes repairing cracks, addressing discolouration, flaking, and performing a thorough cleaning to remove centuries of accumulated dirt.

This hands-on approach to conservation provides a rare chance for visitors to engage directly with the restoration process, offering an up-close look at the craftsmanship and artistry of one of Europe’s most spectacular historic ceilings.

Lanhydrock, a gem in the National Trust’s collection, has also announced the re-opening of its house and garden to the public daily from March 1st. Alongside the ceiling restoration viewing, guests can enjoy the spring blooms in the garden, with magnificent magnolias, camellias, and spring bulbs coming into flower. The estate also offers adventure through its purpose-built cycle trails, with cycle hire available, and the chance to explore its ancient woodland, river, and meadows.

Visitors can refuel at the Park Cafe and Courtyard Cafe, which are now open for the season, offering homemade cakes, hot lunches, and barista-made hot drinks. The shop and Plant Centre provide a range of locally-made produce and thoughtful gifts, rounding out a day of exploration and discovery.

Lanhydrock invites everyone to experience not only the beauty of its estate and gardens but also a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness the painstaking work of conserving a piece of history. The house and garden are open from 10.30 am to 5 pm, with the Long Gallery ceiling restoration viewable from 11 am to 5 pm (last entry at 4.30 pm), ensuring a full day of activities for all visitors.
