Smoove & Turrell Bring Northern Funk to Redruth – First Courtyard Gig at The Buttermarket
Funk Legends to Headline Newly Refurbished Venue on 21st March
FOURFOUR is bringing Gateshead’s legendary ‘Northern Funk’ band Smoove & Turrell to Redruth’s newly refurbished Buttermarket for its first courtyard live show on Friday 21st March. The night will feature support from rising neo-soul artists Will Eason & Joe Hurworth.
A Decade of Northern Funk
Smoove & Turrell’s journey began in the North East of England, where a shared passion for soul music brought them together. Smoove and keyboardist Mike Porter first collaborated on the now-classic track ‘I Can’t Give You Up’, recorded in Mike’s house with his Hammond Organ crammed into the utility room. The original vinyl pressings became highly sought after in the underground Mod and Northern Soul scene, selling out immediately and fetching up to £160 in online bidding wars.
The band quickly gained traction when Craig Charles championed their music on The Craig Charles Funk & Soul Show. This exposure led to two Radio 2 Record of the Week accolades and a BBC 6 Music playlist. Their second album, Eccentric Audio, propelled them onto the touring circuit, building a devoted fanbase. They even landed major sync deals, with tracks featuring on TV shows, films, and ABC network primetime ads.
Chart Success and Global Recognition
Smoove & Turrell’s commitment to their fans has been central to their success. Their ‘get in the van and play the show’ attitude led to them crowdfunding their Canadian Music Week trip in just two days. In 2019, they marked their ten-year milestone with the album “Solid Brass – 10 Years of Northern Funk”, featuring their biggest live hits and new tracks I’m A Man and Give It Back.
Their 2020 album “Stratos Bleu” took them to new heights, securing a UK Dance Album Chart Number 1 and making the Overall Album Top 40. The album was also named Album of the Day on BBC 6 Music. They followed this up with “Red Ellen” in 2023, an album dedicated to post-war social justice campaigner Ellen Wilkinson. Less electronic than its predecessor but still dancefloor-ready, Red Ellen cemented the band’s status as a powerhouse of British funk and soul.
Support from Will Eason & Joe Hurworth
Joining the night’s line-up is the dynamic duo Will Eason & Joe Hurworth, two R&B and Soul artists who have already made a mark on the industry. Having amassed over 2.5 million global streams and a dedicated following of over 100,000 fans, they have performed at Boardmasters, supported acts like Tom Misch and Metronomy, and headlined their own UK shows. Their upcoming 2025 album is highly anticipated, and their neo-soul and R&B fusion promises an unforgettable set.
