Mousehole to Honour Brave Lifeboat Crew at Annual Blessing Tonight
The picturesque harbour of Mousehole will resonate with the voices of the Mousehole Male Voice Choir this evening as the community gathers for the annual blessing of the RNLI lifeboats and their valiant crews. The service, scheduled for 7 PM tonight, will pay special tribute to the heroes of the Solomon Browne lifeboat tragedy.
A Solemn Remembrance
At the heart of tonight’s ceremony will be a poignant remembrance of the Solomon Browne’s crew, who tragically lost their lives in a rescue mission on 19th December 1981. The crew made the ultimate sacrifice while attempting to save the passengers and crew of the coaster Union Star amidst tempestuous seas.
The lost heroes include Coxswain William Trevelyan Richards, Second Coxswain and Mechanic James Madron, Assistant Mechanic Nigel Brockman, Emergency Mechanic John Blewett, and crew members Charles Greenhaugh, Kevin Smith, Barrie Torrie, and Gary Wallis. As a mark of respect, each of their names will be solemnly read out, followed by the tolling of a bell.
Blessing the Lifeboats
The focal point of this evening’s event will be the blessing of Penlee’s lifeboats, the Ivan Ellen and Mollie and Ivor Dent. This annual tradition not only honours current volunteers who risk their lives to save others but also strengthens the bond between the lifeboat station and the Mousehole community.
Community and Courage
Tonight’s service not only reflects on past sacrifices but also celebrates the ongoing commitment of today’s RNLI volunteers. The Mousehole Male Voice Choir’s performance is expected to add a poignant musical tribute to the event, echoing the community’s resilient spirit.
This annual service underscores the courage and dedication of those who serve in lifeboats, ensuring that the legacy of the Solomon Browne crew continues to inspire. The public is encouraged to attend and pay their respects to these brave individuals who have become a beacon of bravery and selflessness in Cornwall.
