In a swift and dramatic rescue on Sunday, 9th June, RNLI Penlee’s all-weather Severn Class Lifeboat, the Ivan Ellen, saved two individuals from a capsized craft in Mount’s Bay.
The incident unfolded just before 4:30 PM when Falmouth Coastguard received an urgent tasking request following reports from gig rowers who spotted the small vessel overturned east of the Gear Pole.
Rapid Response from Lifeboat Crew
Under the command of Coxswain Patch Harvey, the RNLI lifeboat, manned by six dedicated volunteers, launched immediately. Within two minutes, they arrived at the scene. One person was quickly pulled onboard the lifeboat, while the other was rescued by a nearby yacht and subsequently transferred to the lifeboat.
Medical Attention and Recovery
Both individuals were found to be extremely cold and exhibiting signs of hypothermia. The lifeboat crew administered warmth and provided oxygen to one casualty while awaiting an ambulance. The Penlee Lifeboat then headed back to Newlyn, ensuring the casualties could be properly warmed inside the lifeboat station until medical help arrived.
Follow-Up Actions
After safely delivering the casualties to the station, the lifeboat crew relaunched to recover the capsized vessel and the personal belongings of those rescued, returning everything to Newlyn.
Coxswain Patch Harvey commended the efforts of all involved, saying, “The actions of the gig rowers informing the Coastguard immediately and the assistance of the yacht helped save two lives, everyone involved did a great job.”
Safety Reminders for Water Activities
This incident serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of safety measures when engaging in water activities:
- Always wear a personal flotation device.
- Dress appropriately for the weather conditions.
- Carry a means of calling for help on your person, such as a mobile phone with the SafeTrx app, ensuring it is easily accessible in an emergency.
- Develop your skills by contacting your national governing body, local club, or watersports centre for the best training options.
This successful rescue operation highlights the critical role of quick response and community assistance in saving lives at sea.
