Marazion School Buries 100-Year Time Capsule
On Friday, 19th July 2024, a significant event unfolded at the newly renovated Gwelva boat landing in Marazion, Cornwall.
A commemorative plaque was unveiled, marking the site where a unique 100-year time capsule has been buried. This ceremony celebrated the connection between today’s generation and those of the future, with a strong emphasis on preserving the heritage and everyday life of west Cornwall for posterity.
Collaboration with Marazion School
The time capsule project was a collaborative effort led by Kerry Rice, Head of Learning for St Aubyn Estates, who worked closely with every pupil at Marazion School. The students drew inspiration from the renowned Newlyn School artists, such as Stanhope Forbes, Dame Laura Knight, and Harold Harvey, whose vivid depictions of Cornish life over a century ago have become iconic. The children contributed drawings, writings, and projects that capture the essence of life in west Cornwall today, ensuring that the capsule’s contents will provide a snapshot of contemporary life when it is opened in 2124.
A Historic Location with Modern Enhancements
The time capsule is buried beneath the Gwelva boat landing, a site that holds a rich history and is directly opposite the iconic St Michael’s Mount. The recent extensive renovations of the boat landing were carried out by Cornish Heritage Builders. Their work involved meticulous craftsmanship and careful engineering to ensure that Gwelva remains a functional and resilient boat landing for future generations. The construction process was closely coordinated with the tides and weather, reflecting the builders’ deep respect for the local environment.
Looking Towards the Future
The unveiling of the plaque and the burial of the time capsule at Gwelva is not just a celebration of the past but a hopeful nod to the future. The event symbolised the ongoing connection between the local community and its rich cultural heritage, while also creating a tangible link to those who will live and learn in Marazion a century from now. As the plaque stands as a reminder, the community can look forward to a time when their descendants will uncover the carefully preserved memories and reflections of 2024.
