Local Charity Shop Raises £42K For Cancer Research at Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust
In a heartwarming display of community spirit and dedication, volunteers at the Marazion Cancer Shop have once again made a significant contribution to cancer research, raising an impressive £42,000 for the Cancer Research Charity Fund of the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust.
This recent donation is part of a remarkable long-term effort that has seen the shop support this vital cause for over 12 years, with total donations now exceeding £300,000.
Visit from Dr Duncan Wheatley
The funds were handed over to Duncan Wheatley , a Consultant Oncologist and the Director of Research at the hospital, during a special visit where he and his team from the Research and Development department met with the shop’s volunteers. The visit was not only an opportunity for Duncan to express his gratitude but also to discuss the ongoing research projects at the hospital and the significant impact of the contributions made by the charity shop.
Where the Funds Go
The money raised by this entirely volunteer-run shop has been instrumental in enhancing the hospital’s cancer research capabilities. It has helped provide additional staff, supported local researchers, and covered the costs for essential new equipment and specialist training. Furthermore, it has enabled the funding of transport costs for patients, facilitating their participation in crucial research studies, which for some, represent their only treatment option.
Recognised for Their Contributions
The dedication and impact of the volunteers have not gone unnoticed. This year, the team was honoured with the Marazion Community Champions of the Year 2023 award, a testament to their hard work and commitment to making a difference in the lives of those affected by cancer.
Continued Support Needed
As the Marazion Cancer Shop continues its commendable work, the community’s ongoing support remains as vital as ever. Each purchase and donation at the shop plays a crucial role in sustaining this momentum, helping to advance cancer research and provide hope and new possibilities for patients and their families.
