Lostwithiel to Reconnect with the Installation of a New Footbridge After Half a Century

Residents of Lostwithiel and passengers of the local railway are set to experience a significant enhancement in their daily commutes and local travels. Network Rail has announced plans to install a temporary footbridge at Lostwithiel station, reinstating a vital link that has been absent for over 50 years. This development promises to ease access across the railway, marking a pivotal moment for community connectivity and safety.

A Temporary Solution with Permanent Benefits

The previous footbridge, a key pathway for the town’s inhabitants, was dismantled in the late 1960s, leaving a notable gap in local infrastructure. The installation of a temporary bridge this summer aims to quickly mend this gap, improving pedestrian safety and accessibility while plans for a permanent structure are finalised. The temporary footbridge will notably eliminate the need for pedestrians to wait at the Grenville Road level crossing, thus enhancing the flow between the town centre and the station platforms.

Addressing a Community Need

The decision to install a temporary bridge came in response to the considerable delays caused by the level crossing barriers, which can be closed for up to 22 minutes per hour due to the passage of trains along the Cornish main line. This project not only addresses the immediate need for safer, more efficient crossing options but also lays the groundwork for a long-term solution that aligns with modern safety regulations.

Collaborative Efforts for a Seamless Transition

Network Rail’s commitment to this project has been echoed by local and regional representatives, highlighting a collective effort to enhance Lostwithiel’s infrastructure. Bogdan Lupu, Network Rail’s industry programme director, emphasised the organisation’s priority to put passengers and the local community first, ensuring the temporary bridge serves as a reliable interim solution while permanent plans are developed. Sheryll Murray, MP for South East Cornwall, alongside former mayor Tim Hughes, has been pivotal in advocating for the bridge’s return, reflecting the community’s desire for improved connectivity.

Richard Williams-Pears from Cornwall Council and Lee Goodson from Great Western Railway also voiced their support, indicating a strong partnership between the council, Network Rail, and GWR. Their collaboration underlines a shared commitment to enhancing the passenger experience and community well-being in Lostwithiel.

A Forward-Looking Endeavour

As Lostwithiel looks forward to the return of its footbridge, the initiative stands as a testament to the power of community advocacy and collaborative planning. The temporary bridge not only promises immediate benefits but also signifies a step towards a future where local infrastructure meets the evolving needs of its residents and visitors. With plans for a permanent bridge on the horizon, Lostwithiel is on the path to reclaiming a piece of its history while looking forward to a more connected and accessible future.
