Cornish Lithium’s Latest Move Could Revolutionise UK’s Battery Sector

Published On: 17 September 2024Last Updated: 17 September 2024By

Cornish Lithium and HELM AG have announced a new collaboration aimed at accelerating the development of a sustainable UK-based lithium supply chain. The two companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 17 September 2024, marking a significant step towards the production of battery-grade lithium compounds in Europe.

A Boost for UK Battery Sector

Cornish Lithium, a Cornwall-based mineral exploration company, and LevertonHELM, a UK subsidiary of HELM AG specialising in lithium chemicals, will join forces to produce battery-grade lithium compounds from Cornwall’s geothermal brines. This partnership supports the growing demand for lithium, a key component in electric vehicle batteries and renewable energy storage systems.

Through the MoU, Cornish Lithium will collaborate closely with HELM to source the necessary reagents for both its Trelavour Hard Rock Project and geothermal operations. Additionally, the agreement includes potential off-take arrangements for by-products expected to emerge from Cornish Lithium’s projects in the coming years.

Strengthening the European Lithium Supply Chain

This collaboration is expected to bolster the European lithium supply chain, which is critical to supporting the renewable energy sector and the UK’s automotive industry. The deal is seen as a major milestone in establishing a circular supply chain for battery-grade lithium products.

Jeremy Wrathall, Founder, Chairman and CEO of Cornish Lithium, emphasised the long-discussed potential of partnering with LevertonHELM. He highlighted the importance of securing a domestic lithium supply to maintain the competitiveness of UK automotive manufacturing.

Stephen Elgueta Wallis, Vice President Energy Materials at HELM, stated that the partnership fits HELM’s aim to expand its presence in the European lithium-ion battery supply chain. He added that the development of UK lithium resources would contribute to the country’s energy transition and help lower carbon emissions.

A Step Towards Cornwall’s Green Future

Cornish Lithium has been pioneering innovative ways to extract lithium from both geothermal waters and hard rock in the historic mining district of Cornwall. The company’s efforts are expected to contribute to the UK’s green revolution, helping meet the growing demand for metals essential to electric vehicles and renewable energy.

As this new partnership unfolds, it could not only boost Cornwall’s mining industry but also place the UK at the forefront of sustainable lithium production in Europe.
