Last Wednesday marked an important event for Liskeard as Councillor Christina Whitty was elected the new Mayor.

Councillor Julian Smith was chosen as the Deputy Mayor in the same election. The ceremony saw the outgoing Mayor, Councillor Simon Cassidy, handing over responsibilities and acknowledging contributions from various individuals and groups.

Donations and Commendations

During the evening, significant presentations were made by Councillor Simon Cassidy. A cheque for £555.84 was donated to the Cornwall Air Ambulance, his chosen charity for the past year. This donation reflects the community’s support and gratitude towards the essential services provided by the Air Ambulance.

PC Alexander Willmott received a certificate of commendation for his bravery during an incident earlier this year. This recognition underscores the vital role and dedication of the local police force in ensuring the safety and security of the town.

Acknowledgements and Awards

Councillor Cassidy also took the opportunity to thank family members who have supported councillors throughout the year. Their behind-the-scenes efforts are invaluable to the functioning and success of the council.

Councillor Christina Whitty presented the George Vaughan-Ellis Trophy to Sioux Dunster, who was nominated by the previous recipient. This award celebrates individuals who have made notable contributions to the community.

New Appointments and Entertainment

Rose Ramwell and Ethan Mort were appointed as Mace Bearers for the event, performing their duties excellently and contributing to the smooth running of the evening.

Adding a touch of entertainment to the formal proceedings, the Liskeard TICS (Thought I Couldn’t Sing) group performed four songs. They are regular hirers of The Public Hall and their performance was thoroughly enjoyed by all attendees. The evening concluded with the group leading a rendition of “Trelawney,” a fitting end to the ceremony.

This event not only marked the transition of mayoral duties but also highlighted the bravery, generosity, and talent within the Liskeard community.
